When I moved to New York, I soon discovered one of the most amazing, and simultaneously difficult things about this city: there is always a million things to do. I sometimes imagine what it must be like to visit this city as a tourist, to just do everything you could possibly want to do, eat every meal out, go to a million shows, plays, concerts, art galleries, shop in SoHo and buy everything you want. But thats not what its like when you live here, especially not as a student on a somewhat tight budget. You have to pick and choose what you go to, you have to learn to say no to things. If I lived like a tourist every day I would be broke very quickly.

At the same time, however, there is something amazing even about just living here. The everyday things people do wherever they live, are often just a lot more amazing here. Last week on my lunch break I went to Amy's Bread, just a few blocks away
to pick up a loaf of some of the most delicious bread I've ever had: whole wheat oat pecan with golden raisins. I fill my fridge with food from the Greenmarket in Union Square which runs 3 times a week, I drink only the best coffee from the adorable cafes in my neighborhood and when I do go out, I get to eat some of the most exciting foods. When you live in New York you can revisit the same amazing thrift store every week until you score something wonderful, like a Steven Alan dress for 30 bucks, or a Dusen Dusen bag for 25. You can just walk and take the city in, one day at a time. Eventually, once you learn to overcome the push and pull to do, you can just be.
The past few weeks have been tough with school and work, but life is treating me well. I've had lovely times with friends, at a late set at Jazz at Lincoln Center, an
amazing concert at Carnegie Hall, or eating a delicious brunch with a new friend at Austrian neighborhood restaurant
Edi and the Wolf. But it has also been lovely times making home cooked meals, knitting, and taking in all the coziness.
