Michelle's super-awesome NYC guide!

So here it is: my NYC guide, and let me tell you - it was fun! Going through all my favourite places in the city has felt like a really fantastic summation of the last two years, and all the places that filled my heart with joy.

What you won't find on this list: tourist traps,  Subway sandwiches franchise locations, or reputable bus tours.

What you will find on this list: great cafes, bars, restaurants and favourite hang outs, organized loosely by neighborhood, followed by a short list of my preferred non-annoying NYC tourist sites.

I will update this list if something I forgot about (which is inevitable) pops back into my head, but please leave a comment if you want a specific recommendation. I will not pretend to be an expert on NYC dining, especially not when it comes to the upper east and upper west sides, but if you follow some of these recommendations I can promise you'll get a great taste of the city, its all its weird, amazing dimensions.

So click ahead for the guide!

j + m weekend part 2: williamsburg indulgences

After our fantastic Friday and Saturday, Sunday was really all about edible indulgences. But I'd say we earned it. Since the L train was closed, Drew, Joe and I decided to walk across the Williamsburg bridge to the Brooklyn Flea, located on the Williamsburg waterfront. The entire walk took us about an hour or so, but it was definitely worth it, for the view, the funny graffiti, and the rewards at the end! We munched on fresh tuna tacos, wood-fire pizza, and gourmet doughnuts.

home sweet home

So after a long weekend of running around like mad, I am finally moved into my Alphabet City digs. Poeple have been asking to see some pics of my place, so here are a few tastes:
Everything in my room ended up being pretty much black and white, which I like.
Pavement poster, family and friends in photos, my favourite jewelry tree
Workspace.
Hallway storage.

morrocan meals + morning mimosas

Mimosas and coffee in Park Slope, Brooklyn

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't hard to come back. Leaving family, friends, boyfriend, home, comfy bed, and even Toronto was definitely a challenge. New York is wonderful, but Toronto will always feel like home. Arriving back at my residence apartment, it felt drab and sad and empty. So I had to pick myself up, get myself out and cheer myself up.

Friday, the day I arrived, I had my friend Lily over for dinner, and afterwards she somehow managed to convince me (thank you Lily) to go to a club with her and her 3 friends on the Bowery. I cannot tell you what it is called, but there was no cover, and they were playing "The Thong Song". I only stayed for an a hour and a bit, but between the crappy hip hop, the strong g+t and the fun company it definitely brought my mood up.

Saturday I hit up the gym, ran errands, and met up with my friend Caroline. We just wandered around my neighbourhood, and the NYU area for a few hours, and even made  a stop at Murrays. I've realized that Murray's cream cheese may be the best cream cheese I've ever had.  Which is good, because they always put on WAY too much.

The evening was a blast. I finally got to try Cafe Mogador, a Morrocan restaurant my Israeli cousins had raved about (they claimed it has the best hummus in the city). My delicious chicken tagine, the great company (Alex and Jake), and truly, some of the best hummus I've ever had made for a fabulous meal. After dinner, I dropped by an MCC (my department) get together at Niagara, a funky, dive-like bar in Alphabet City. I got really excited because they were basically playing a playlist of high-school era Michelle music (Ted Leo, The Distillers). Seeing all the lovely people in my department made me remember what a great group we have.

I had the perfect lazy Sunday. Lay in bed and watched Freaks and Geeks, then took the subway to Park Slope, Brooklyn to have brunch with my cousin Jeremy and his roommate Jon. Reasonably priced, delicious french fare, I had Eggs Benny with salmon (yes, again), Jon had regular Eggs Benny, and Jer had Croque Monsieur. We also ordered a pitcher of mimosas, which I think is an ideal way to start any sunday. I napped and watched stupid TV at Jer's apartment, and spent the rest of the afternoon chatting with my friend Drew about all the shows we're excited about (we're going to see the Mountain Goats in March together!).

Now, just getting ready for my first day of my internship at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and my first out of department class, a marketing class in the Professional Studies school. Super nervous, but also super excited!
