belleville, invalides etc.

Life here is sweeter each day. On Thursday evening, after my fun day at the cemetery and Canal, I had a super fun evening with some folks in my program. The night started with an excursion through Belleville, which is a really great part of Paris that is an interesting mix between the beautiful and the derelict, and old and the new. In some ways it reminds me a lot of parts of Brooklyn.

We finally arrived at our destination. A restaurant whose name I forget (Dennis, please fill me in) that Dennis had read about online. But, I will tell you that the place was fantastic- a regular performance spot for Edith Piaf, and there are traces of her all over the place including the weird "La Vie en Rose" drink we were given, somewhere between a cocktail and wine. Amazingly, I assume because of the Belleville location, we seemed to be the only tourists in the place save one couple from Switzerland. We ordered charcuterie and had the amazing opportunity to listen to some authentic French music performed by an accordionist and music box player. We were even given songbooks to sing along!

After our fantastic musical experience, we headed back to our area where we discovered our new favorite neighborhood bar- Clash and Velvet Underground on the stereo, reasonable pints, and free shots from the bartender!

Amazing mustached music box player! Was very proud that he had visited Missisauga.

Yesterday I woke up early and hit the Belleville food market, picking up some tasty fruits (although avoiding raw veg for a bit, after this ridiculous E Coli scare!) We then had a tour of the Invalides and Napoleon's tomb by our professor, which we followed up with some hanging out by the Champ du Mars.
